Frailty considerations for clinical settings

In a recent publication, we discuss frailty as a recognized cornerstone of geriatric medicine that increases the risk of geriatric syndromes and adverse health outcomes in older and vulnerable populations. Although numerous screening instruments have been developed and validated to improve the feasibility of frailty assessment in clinical practice, there is a lack of agreement between frailty instruments that has slowed broad implementation. Several interventions to improve frailty-related health outcomes have been developed and tested to date, including exercise, nutrition, multi-component interventions, and individually-tailored geriatric care models. We review possible strategies to prevent frailty and offer considerations on what is needed to move frailty assessment into clinical settings on a larger scale.
