What is frailty? What does it mean to be frail, or to become frail? How do we determine who is frail and who is not? What drives frailty? What helps to prevent people from becoming frail? How do we manage, treat, and possibly ameliorate frailty?
These are questions of great interest to me and to a growing number of researchers worldwide. With rapid global population aging, the need to identify and intervene upon older adults who are susceptible to serious health declines is an important focus of prevention. Frailty is thought of as a state of increased vulnerability to develop adverse health outcomes when encountering a stressor condition or event. While this theoretical definition is generally accepted, a standard operational definition has not yet been reached.
